Heroic Knack - Master Jury-rigger - by Timothy McCaskill

"You need a what? Okay, give me a few minutes to see what I can slap together."

You have enough practice building and repairing devices that you intuitively know you way around and through almost every machine that you have come across. You are so adept, in fact, that you can jury-rig together any mundane device that you have personally examined. In only a matter of hours, without any type of blueprints to follow, you can have a mostly functional if not reliable version of that device. You also have a remarkable talent for building advanced inventions. You know your way around machines well enough that you can improvise while constructing devices and shorten the overall construction time.

System: If the character has had time to examine a mundane device then the character can build a basic version with the materials on hand. The player spends an Inspiration point then the character can construct any non-super-science device in a matter of hours. This device has little or no advancements and is to be considered jury-rigged so it starts out with a damage rating of dented and cannot last more than a couple of scenes. If a lot of corners were cut in the initial construction (i.e. it is mostly spit and bailing wire) or the device was pushed hard during use (more than ten 10s were accumulated or more than one botch) then the device will, at the storyteller's discretion, fail in a catastrophic way.

The following can modify the time needed. (With a minimum of 10 minutes.)

For the construction of super science devices with which the character has blueprints, the player can roll Intuitive Inspiration to reduce the construction time by half the successes rolled (round up) in levels. If the construction time is already at four hours, then decrease by one hour intervals. If the player botches the roll then the construction time is increased by one level to repair the damage done.

Prerequisite: The character must have at least 4 dots in Engineering to be able to take this knack. You have to know what you are doing before you are really dangerous.
